The Job Assignment · 21 Days

Most people ask the wrong question first.

Not "how much am I drinking?"

But — what job am I asking alcohol to do?

Understand the job. Everything else gets easier.

A lot of us have typed some version of "how do I quit drinking" or "how do I cut back" into Google late at night. Tired searches, looking for an answer that never quite lands.

Here's the shift: the better questions aren't about the drinking at all. How do I celebrate at the end of the week. How do I calm my nervous system. How do I reconnect with the people I love.

Worry less about the drinking. Worry more about the jobs you need to bring back.

What Job Is Alcohol Doing For You?

10 private audio lessons. 21 days. On your own time.

The Tuesday night drink after a hard day and the Friday night drink with friends aren't doing the same job. Most people have more on the list than they'd guess — usually closer to ten, sometimes dozens over a year. Some show up once. Some are chronic.

This program walks through four ideas, each one a little further from the drink itself than the last:

CLOSEST TO THE DRINK

Job Assignment

What job am I asking this drink to do? Relax me. Help me celebrate. Quiet my mind. Make this easier to get through.
Once you can name the job — really name it, not just "stress" — you know what you're actually looking to replace, instead of just trying to white-knuckle past the drink itself.

THE MOMENT OF THE DRINK

The 10 & 10 Rule

Before the drink, take 10 minutes. Try to do 10% of the job yourself. If the job is relaxation — music on, sit down, phone aside, just for those 10 minutes.

Then check in. Calmer? Still want the drink? If you do, you still can. But you've practiced checking in with yourself instead of skipping past it. Small, almost underwhelming — that's the part that actually sticks.

EARLIER IN THE DAY

Confluence

Drinking decisions are rarely made in the moment — they're built up to. Emotions, patterns, and the day itself all flow together, like two rivers meeting.

Think about happy hour. By 4pm you're already excited, a little nervous, picturing the bar, your coworkers, the time of day. That confluence — feeling plus pattern plus place — started building hours before the first drink.

THE EVERYDAY PRACTICE

Signals

Furthest from any single drink — and the one you carry with you every day. Signals are the small, easy-to-miss signs that something needs attention.

Two coffee cups still sitting on your desk. Snapping at your spouse over nothing. Sleeping later than usual. Missing garbage day. None of it's about alcohol directly — and that's exactly the point. Learning to notice these earlier gives you more room to respond before anything builds into the rapids.

About Austin

I started asking questions about my drinking in my twenties. At 24, I walked away from the support I'd found — not because it didn't help, but because the idea of "forever" felt too big to hold onto.

It took another decade before I tried something different: 100 days. Not forever, just 100 days, to see what I'd actually learn about what alcohol had been doing for me.

That question — what job is this doing — changed everything, long before I had language for it. I've spent the years since teaching addiction at the graduate level and helping shape how other professionals support people earlier, before things become a crisis.

Now I work with people who recognize themselves in some version of that. The drink after work. The second one that wasn't planned. The rule that keeps bending. Nobody here is going to hand you one path and tell you it's the only way. This is about curiosity, self-trust, and taking one honest step — not shame, and not perfection.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

A few honest answers

Do I have to quit drinking?

No. Nothing here asks you to decide that. This is about understanding what's happening, not committing to a forever decision.

What if I miss a lesson, or still drink during the 21 days?

That's normal, not a failure. The lessons and emails are yours to come back to whenever you're ready. There's no streak to break.

Do I have to be part of a group?

No. The lessons are private space just for this program. Everything is easy to find and listen to. No group, no camera, no one else involved unless you book the optional 1:1 session.

When does it start?

The 21 day emails start on June 29. Everything is audio and email — nothing live to schedule around.

If you go through the lessons and it doesn't feel like it gave you something real, email me within the first 7 days and I'll refund you. No explanation needed.
